Peatlands, agricultural policy and bio-based growth

This work package investigates the possibilities of sustainable use of the numerous peatlands in the Baltic Sea region, their potential for the development of a bio-economy and the social framework conditions necessary for this. Strengthening the bio-economy is a declared goal of the EU Baltic Sea Strategy. The restoration of drained peatlands and the sustainable use of wet peat soils is - for example with regard to greenhouse gas balances, biodiversity or the ability of peatlands to retain water in the landscape - crucial for a sustainability transformation of the region.
