The Baltic Sea Region is a cultural, geographical and political entity characterised by a diversity of cultures, a unique ecosystem and its geopolitical importance.

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Baltic Sea Region Research (IFZO) explores the Baltic Sea Region through the multiple connections between cultures, their influence on the ecosystem and the exemplary nature of its transnational institutions.

Fragmented transformations

Fragmented transformations

In an interdisciplinary approach, the cultural, political, linguistic and historical conditions and obstacles of transformations are examined. Broadened by cultural and regional perspectives on transformations, the ability of societies to change is analyzed in the areas of Shared Heritage, New Nationalisms, Innovations and Energy, Security as well as Sustainability Transformation, and fragmented transformations in the Baltic Sea Region are made visible with the help of historical and contemporary land use patterns.

Virtuelle Hochschule Ostseeraum

Virtuelle Hochschule Ostseeraum

Virtuelle Hochschule Ostseeraum is an international, cross-institutional and interdisciplinary project that aims to establish a new virtual learning environment at the University of Greifswald and promote collaboration between the universities in the Baltic Sea region. The students are accompanied by the teachers in cooperative projects, research-based learning is a central component of the courses. If the travel situation allows, the course is rounded off by a one-week excursion.

Baltic Peripeties

"Baltic Peripeties. Narratives of Reformations, Revolutions and Catastrophes" is an International Research Training Group at the Universities of Greifswald, Tartu and Trondheim, funded by the DFG since April 2021. With the help of the Aristotelian concept of "peripetia", the central turning point in a story, the interdisciplinary network of nearly 40 participating scholars investigates narrative constructions of events, upheavals and catastrophes in the Baltic Sea region.

History and Culture of the Baltic Sea Region

In the Master's program, cultural competencies in particular are taught, qualifying students both for specialization in the study of the Baltic Sea region and for professional activity in the Baltic Sea region. In interdisciplinary seminars and lectures on languages, literatures and the history of the Baltic Sea region, students gain a comprehensive picture of the region. Research-based teaching in English enables students to participate in current issues and discourses in an innovative study environment.

Manor house center of the Baltic Sea region

The research project Herrenhauszentrum des Ostseeraums (Manor House Center of the Baltic Sea Region) is concerned with the study of post-medieval manor houses from 1500 onwards. The estimated 12,000 to 15,000 estates are spread across all the countries bordering the Baltic Sea and thus form a central component of the unique cultural landscape of the Baltic Sea region. Between 2021 and 2024, the project will be funded in equal parts by the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

Young People Network for Balticness

Young People Network for Balticness

The project, supported by the Council of the Baltic Sea States, aims to encourage pupils, students and young academics to engage with discourses on the Baltic Sea region and its identity formation. In summer and winter schools, students from all over the world learn about the horizons of meaning of societies in the Baltic Sea region through discourses, shared cultural memory, patterns of mobility, understandings of democracy, and constructions of space.

OPENSPACES

The aim of the project OPENSPACES is to develop university courses in the field of geoinformation science for Ukrainian students, which can be conducted independently from the students' location, their temporal availability or the availability of license servers.
