A Common Energy Market in the Baltic Sea Region

The central goal of political initiatives to establish a common market of renewable energies in the Baltic Sea region is examined with regards to the barriers and obstacles of this transformation process and with a special focus on energy security issues in the region. In this context, energy market integration is a cornerstone of the timely implementation of the energy transition. So far, however, energy markets in the Baltic Sea region remain highly fragmented and prevent progress towards a successful energy transition. Therefore, this work package examines possible obstacles in the process such as diverging economic interests and aspects as well as energy security arguments. On the way to a higher degree of integration, so-called offshore meshed grids (offshore networks) can help. The study will examine the role of such networks in strengthening interconnection. Finally, the role of LNG terminals will be examined in this context. The following research questions guide the study: What steps need to be taken to support the European Union's goal of developing a common energy market in the Baltic Sea region? What actions are needed to promote interconnectivity of energy systems across national borders? How can joint national and international energy activities and policies be coordinated to enhance energy security in the Baltic Sea Region?
