Based on the findings of the work package "Baltic Sea Literacy", we then investigate in this work package a holistic impact model of individual behavioural changes towards a sustainable approach to the sea in general and the Baltic Sea in particular. Baltic Sea Literacy is a central factor in the investigation of behavioural changes. The research hypotheses of this PhD project are:

  1. CONDITIONAL FACTORS: For research on sea-related sustainable behaviour, the interplay of personal and external factors as well as internal and external incentives must be considered holistically. Real world laboratories enable the experimental or quasi-experimental investigation of these interrelationships.
  2. SPECIFICITY: A number of the external factors as well as the internal and external incentive structures are region-specific; the perception of the Baltic Sea plays a decisive role in behavioural changes.
