Abstract:

This study explores the link between political ideologies, international organisations (IOs), and parliamentary support for military missions in Germany from 1990 to 2019. The research highlights an inverted U-shape pattern, where centrist parties are more likely to support military missions than those at the ideological extremes. The UN receives broad support across the party spectrum, especially among centrist parties, while NATO gains backing from centre-right and radical-right parties. A case study on NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) reveals divergent positions among German parties: centre-left parties are slightly cautious, centre-right parties show unconditional support and radical-left and radical-right parties oppose the eFP. This study contributes to the broader discourse on how domestic political dynamics influence foreign policy decisions by exploring the complex interplay between political ideology, IO, and military engagements.
