Speaking: Gregor Rohmann (Rostock) & Franziska Evers (Lübeck)
Moderation: Laura Tack (Greifswald)
Legends and myths surround our image of pirates, including in the Baltic Sea region with its prominent figure of “Störtebeker”. However, the legal status of pirates and other violent maritime actors in the Middle Ages, often operating at the interfaces of trade and naval forces, was not yet clearly defined. This lecture explores how (legal) images of piracy changed against the backdrop of new conditions such as nationalisation and global expansion.
Prof. Dr Gregor Rohmann is Professor of Regional Cultural History at the University of Rostock, focusing on medieval history, the Hanseatic League, and notions of the ‘pirate’ as a violent actor in the context of social and (maritime) legal transformation processes in Northern Europe.
Franziska Evers, M.A. works as a researcher, exhibition- and project manager at the European Hansemuseum, Lübeck. Together with Prof. Gregor Rohmann she has curated the special exhibition “Störtebeker & Konsorten – Piraten der Hansezeit?” in 2019/2020.
