Sophie Schmäing

Sophie Schmäing ist politische Soziologin und forscht zu Demokratie und politischer Partizipation, kriegsbedingter Migration und digitaler Ethnographie. Der regionale Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit liegt auf dem östlichen Europa, insbesondere der Ukraine. Nach Studium und Auslandsaufenthalten in Halle (Saale), Poznań, Charkiw und Berlin wurde sie 2023 an der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen mit einer Arbeit zur urbanen Demokratie in der post-Maidan Ukraine promoviert. Ihre Dissertation wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit dem Klaus-Mehnert-Preis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Osteuropakunde (DGO). Nach Stationen als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Universität Gießen, als Post-Doc-Stipendiatin an der Freien Universität Berlin und Koordinatorin im Prisma Ukraïna-Programm des Forums Transregionale Studien Berlin arbeitet sie seit Mai 2025 als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Interdisziplinären Forschungszentrum Ostseeraum (IFZO) der Universität Greifswald im „Horizon Europe“-Projekt Migration, Affective Geopolitics, and European Democracy in Times of Military Conflicts.
