Energy geopolitics of the Baltic Sea Region

While the states of the Baltic Sea Region hold a relative consensus on the necessity for an energy transition, there is significant variance among states on how to achieve that transition. This is, in part, due to the fragmented energy geopolitics of the region. At the same time, debates on regional energy geopolitics focus primarily on pipeline projects; those on the renewable energy geopolitics of the region remain underexplored. This project aims to provide a comprehensive account of contemporary energy geopolitics in the Baltic Sea Region across all energy sources. Taking into account respective access to energy sources, energy policy objectives, and geoeconomic engagement with external energy suppliers and financiers by the states of the region, it considers both the material and ideational factors shaping regional energy geopolitics. In doing so, it aims to contribute to our understanding of the changing dynamics of regional energy cooperation and contestation and, consequently, of the fragmented energy geopolitics of the BSR.
