Academia Baltica invites you to a conference for junior researchers dedicated to the topic ‘Big and Small in the Baltic Sea Region: Politics, Military, Economy, Culture from the 19th to the 21st Century’. The conference will take place from 25 to 27 September 2026 in Sankelmark near the German-Danish border and the Baltic Sea. It aims to bring together young researchers from the Baltic Sea countries and encourage them to discuss different perspectives on and critically examine the relationship between large and small states in the Baltic Sea region. Possible topics in this context include
- Regional and transcultural concepts (e.g. ‘Baltic States’, ‘Northern Europe’, ‘Hanseatic region’, etc.)
- International relations
- Military and security policy
- Asymmetrical power relations
- Peace policy and research
- Economy, technology and cultural transfer
- Images of friends and foes
- Transnational biographies
Presentations may be given in English or German and should not exceed 20 minutes in length. This will be followed by a 10-minute discussion with conference participants.
The target group of speakers is primarily younger academics (master students, doctoral candidates and postdocs) from countries bordering the Baltic Sea, who are engaged in research related to the above-mentioned topics. The conference is intended as an interdisciplinary forum primarily for historians, but also for researchers with an interest in history from the fields of political science, sociology, literature and linguistics, ethnology, geography and other related subjects.
