Since 2016, the Estonian National Museum has been situated in a modern building on a former Soviet military airfield, telling a national story through its purposeful use of space regarding the historically significant site, architectural design, and displays. With its main exhibitions “Encounters”, which traces Estonian history from the Stone Age to the digital era, and “Echo of the Urals”, focusing on Finno-Ugric cultures, the museum contributes to shaping and preserving a distinct Estonian identity.
Dr Corinna Kuhr-Korolev is a research associate at the ZZF Potsdam and member of the ERC project Perestroika from Below, in which she investigates Soviet people’s thoughts, feelings and actions during the ‘long’ Perestroika of the 1980s and 1990s. Her research focuses on the Soviet Union’s youth and education policy, Nazi art looting in Eastern Europe, occupation history, and post-Soviet social upheavals in Russia.
