“Break this bottle.” Ocean currents, marine science, and global interaction since the early modern period
Sünne Juterczenka (University of Greifswald)

This talk is about the exploration of ocean currents, mainly by means of “drift bottles” (messages in bottles). Local, regional, and global levels of observation are linked in an attempt to overcome the opposition between maritime “metageographies” and small-scale cultural-historical research. The sea proves to be a global space of interaction, constituted by culturally specific perceptions as well as by transcultural contact and communication.
