Nautic Narratives. Memory, Gender, and the Sea in Judith Schalansky’s Blau steht Dir nicht
Elisa Müller-Adams (Trier University)

The connection between narrative and the nautical has been discussed many times. Judith Schalansky's "Blau steht dir nicht" (2009) can be read in the tradition of nautical fiction: Here, maritime motifs such as the island, seafaring and above all the sailor suit open up discourses on gender, identity and memory, and not least on literature itself. In addition, the sea has a central poetological function in Schalansky's novel. Highly self-reflexive, the text thus develops a strategy of writing that can be called 'nautic narrative'.
