Originally from Vienna, Julia Schwab has lived in Scotland for more than a decade, where she also completed her PhD. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at DIIS, where her work focuses on energy politics and the societal dimensions of energy systems. Her research explores how energy transitions are connected to national identity, societal visions of the future and broader geopolitical developments.
At DIIS, she is currently working on the project Reimagining Energy Futures, Designing Techno-Political Orders: Germany and Poland at the Crossroads of Energy Transition. The project examines how Russia's war against Ukraine and the resulting geopolitical shifts are reshaping energy futures in Germany and Poland.
Her visit to Greifswald builds on long-standing cooperation between DIIS, IKEM and IFZO in the fields of security and resilience in the Baltic Sea Region. At the same time, the location provides valuable opportunities for her current research on offshore wind energy by facilitating exchanges with experts and stakeholders in the field.
During her stay, Julia Schwab combined focused research with academic exchange and networking. Reflecting on her time at IFZO, she describes the institute as an exceptionally productive place to work:
“I've been more productive here than I have been in a long time. IFZO is a very pleasant and quiet place to work, and I received a very warm welcome. Greifswald is a beautiful and relaxed city with an inspiring academic environment. The fish sandwiches are excellent, too.”
For Julia Schwab, the stay offered both dedicated time for research and valuable opportunities to strengthen international academic connections.
Interested in a guest research stay at IFZO? We welcome enquiries from researchers at all career stages who would like to explore opportunities for collaboration in Greifswald.
