Digitisation of Rural Areas

Digitisation of Rural Areas

This subproject examines the opportunities and obstacles of digitalization for crisis affected rural areas in the Baltic Sea region. Digitalization can strengthen social participation and reduce feelings of being left behind, but also carries risks such as cyberattacks, disinformation, and social polarization. The project investigates how regional actors respond to crises, adapt digital infrastructures, and develop innovative solutions. Methodologically, it draws on qualitative interviews, policy documents, and digital ethnography to capture the digital sphere as a structure for democratic participation and crisis management.
